The compass feature, beyond its use in apps, seems sort of random and if your are in a real emergency I doubt your iphone battery is going to last long enough to get you where you need to be. Perhaps I'm missing a greater benefit of having this feature?

there is no point of having a compass if there is already a gps in the phone

The compass feature is only available on the 3gs iphone. I have both the 2g and the 3gs iphone, and both are upgraded to 3.0 and 3.01. The only difference in the 3.0 and 3.01 is the hack vulnerability that Apple found, so they basically just provided a patch for it. As for having the compass available at all on 2g or 3g, so far, nothing from Cydia, and even if you upgraded to 3.0/3.01, you are not going to have compass. It is a hardware that Apple has added to the 3gs, I believe.

I have the compass feature, and I haven't seen myself needing to use it. Like star10159 says, gps is sufficient.

Developers can certainly take use of the compass and program it into, let's say a new Maps application.
